Which I do understand, but there's no reason the layman couldn't have been somebody else. Like I said, not the end of the world, but I do know why people picked up on it.

Agreed, I think there might have been a bit of racism in the original series making the only black main character not a scientist and they could have corrected that by having Patty be one of the scientists.

On a whole though I still loved her character, because she was still smart and part of the team even without being a scientist.

Exactly! She proved her worth 100 times over. I ADORED her myself.

So we're settled. Still racist, but not quite as racist as the 1980s version?

Yeah, I agree. I love her and I think it's important to have a layman/working class character, but there's no reason she couldn't have played Melissa McCarthy's character and vice versa.

i've heard several times that melissa mccarthy was originally set to play patty, so...

Yes, I remember reading that as well. But either McCarthy or someone else decided that the role was too similar to the characters she'd done in several movies already (particularly Bridesmaids), and swapped her to be one of the scientists.

To be fair, it sounds like she's a history major. Which, while not science, takes a fuck ton of passion and a different kind of smarts. And keeping all that knowledge in your head is quite the talent, and I'd consider it on par with what a lot of scientists do.

It's smart, but in a different way.
