With the way the series started, I couldn't watch enough to find out. The obvious violent rape of an underage boy, who is then desperate enough to sell his soul for revenge, was enough to turn me away from this "fun" show... Not my cuppa.

Was it supposed to be fun? I don't mean that sarcastically, but what got me to watch it was the fact that it looked like it was intended to be dark?

Kuroshitsuji is a show that is 90% dark-as-fuck gothic tragedy and grand guignol level gore, 10% wacky hijinks. I don't know how on earth you would think it otherwise.

IDK, maybe all the fan gifs and people talking about what a great show it was? It freaked me out, I guess. IDK what I was expecting...I guess just something that would marginally be described as fun by the fans?? >.

I don't mind that the dark events happened. It was an interesting premise for a story, and as I recall, those events were treated as serious and terrible.

I just didn't like the goofy shota gags - all the more inappropriate since he's a rape victim - and well, the goofiness in general. I would've rather it stayed mostly dark the entire time, but it didn't quite find a good enough balance for me. Still, how the first season ended was pretty chilling and I liked that, but a lot of the in between stuff was meh, and I wish the kid had been an older character.

The manga was way better about not doing the stupid gags and exploring the darker themes, which I liked a lot (the fandom's love for shipping them, combined with how bad the second season was, was what turned me off the series in the end, but the manga was the last hold-out for me)

Moralfags watching Kuro and getting triggered gets me everytime. There's nothing wrong with shota. Don't like it, don't watch it. It's not that difficult.

...yes, there is a fucking lot wrong with shota.

I dunno. It's not real so on a scale of 'harmless entertainment' to 'dangerous to children', it's a hell of a lot closer to the former.
