Brushing your teeth /habits??

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very prone to cavities (pretty sure my mouth is like 60% fillings) but I'm really terrible at general oral health (Tooth...brush?? Whaaa??) and at times I do try to make it a habit to brush my teeth/floss/use mouthwash but I find myself making excuses (I'm still going to eat food tonight/drink something/ehh I'm not going out today/etc) and I really want to make a serious effort in making it a proper habit/routine but I just can't seem to get it. Advice?

Huh... for me, the motivation for doing it is "I hate going to the dentist and it's fucking expensive, too" but if you already have lots of fillings, that doesn't sound like a motivation that'd work for you.

I don't have fear of the drills or scary dentist machine sounds so I have that going for me but man, the expenses and guilt make me not like going, lol.

Expenses and guilt?

Drills or scary dentist machine sounds?

There's a lot more to dentist horror than an amalgam in your tooth. Like... root canals (which are basically dead teeth), extractions, and implants. Sure, when the dentist is done, everything's functional, but who the hell wants to let things get that far (if they can help it)?

There's not much advice to give. You know you need to brush. So, do it. First thing in the morning, last thing at night. If you don't like the taste of your toothpaste, try a different one. It doesn't matter if you're going to eat food, the point is to loosen plaques before they can cement themselves to your teeth. It doesn't matter if you're staying home, brushing is for your teeth before it's for any other person.

Maybe try a calendar and gold sticky star reward system to keep track of brushing, too.

You know what, thanks for this. I think I really needed to hear this comment. Someone to sit me down and say, "stop being dumb, you know what's wrong, do something/fix it." I do mean this sincerely since I think my response kinda reads sarcastic, seriously thanks! :D

I did buy a calendar at start of 2016 as my tracker for brushing (and other goal setting) and then I just sorta abandoned it. I think I'll find it again and find some nice stickers/colorful pens or something to track myself again.

Set an alarm programmed to go off whenever you want to brush your teeth. Even if an excuse rears it head, brush. That's usually how I get into routines.

I used to have it set as a reminder on my phone to go off but then I always just ignored it, no consequences, ya'know? But I'll try that again (as an alert/alarm this time) along with the calendar sticker tracker anon above you suggested.

Set a timer and do it the same time every day, or after every meal. The only way to make this a habit is to just buckle down and do it. Routines help with that. The calendar with a gold star sticker isn't a bad idea, I guess. Reward yourself for making it a whole week without forgetting. If you forget, then make sure there's a negative consequence for that, too-- give up watching the latest episode of the show you like until next week, or perform a household chore you dislike doing.

But honestly, this ain't rocket science and there's nothing to "get". You don't need any deep understanding of anything to brush your damn teeth like an adult.

I also have trouble keeping it up (for me its mostly depression, i have trouble keeping up with a lot of basic self care) and for me what helps is starting small and building - so I tell myself that okay, I will start by just doing it once a day, and eventually build up.

I also try not to stress about about eating later if I've already brushed my teeth at night - yeah its not ideal but at least I brushed my teeth!

I still" fall off the wagon" a lot, but those thinking of it like that have been helping me recently.

Maybe it would help to store your toothbrush in a different spot, like someplace you can always see when you are at the bathroom sink and can readily grab. You could even keep it by the kitchen sink and see if that helps.

Keep a brush in a travel case and a mini tube of toothpaste at work or carry one in your bag to school or whatever so you have one on hand for midday brushing.

I actually brush my teeth while I shower, because it reminds me to brush, plus I can just get out, dry, moisturize, dress and go. No dribbling toothpaste all over me and getting unclean again.
