50. lol, KH and KH2 are about 75% of what made me finally see Aerith as an actual character and not a Mary Sue.

P.S.: I don't ship Cloud/Aerith in either FF7 or KH.

I don't see how it's counterintuitive? Well, I played FF7 as lol a 14-year-old twit way back when it first came out, and I swore up and down for the next three years that Aerith was a "blow-up doll" (literally my words!) -- not a real "character" as much as some guy's sainted stereotype of the "perfect" female -- you know, supportive, sweet, self-sacrificing, bland. And I later on came to think I was overreacting, and I could admit that Aerith wasn't all that bad, really, but I still didn't care for her.

I expected to dislike her in KH, but they actually re-introduced her as a character to me, bit by bit: first the gentle but knowing part in KH, where she was an inoffensive background character with a sad backstory and a determination to get home again with her makeshift family; then in Chains of Memories, where they gave me her mysticism and serenity and sweet concern; then in KH2, where they reintroduced her as a confident, independent character, who can and will stare people into submission when they try to boss her around. Before I knew it I was actively shipping her with Leon, and roleplaying her, and stuff.

And that helped me go back and look at her in FF7 and say, wow, actually, Aerith was a pretty cool character. She wasn't totally sweet and supportive; she was selfish and a little sarcastic and more than a little spirited. She was independent and deeply hurt by what had happened to her in the past, and I decided, hey. Maybe I was just a stupid 14-year-old when I formed my opinions about this game, and I can make smarter ones now.

And I don't ship Cloud/Aerith because I like them better platonically -- I love what she means to him, and what she did for him, but I don't love them loving each other Forevers OTP. Maybe if FF7 had turned out differently... But I prefer Cloud/Tifa in either canon, and I love Zack/Aerith (in FF7) and Leon/Aerith (in KH). And I'll take Tifa/Aerith too. :3

The KH bit was counterintuitive, because she seems more flat and lifeless in KH to me than anything, but I guess I can see that. I also hated Aeris when I was younger, because she wore pink and was kind of girly and didn't punch people, so I wrote her off as weak and annoying.

I agree with you on Cloud/Aeris... But then again, Aeris/Sephiroth is probably my favourite FF7 ship, so I don't have any space to criticize anyone, really.
