I'd love, love, love to listen to the drama CDs, but learning Japanese -- and good enough Japanese -- is kind of a tall order. I suppose anyone theoretically could, especially since fandom tends to have a lot of students, but it's seriously not at all practical a lot of the time.

On the other hand, let's be perfectly fair here. You're implying with this secret that you do know Japanese well enough to understand what's going on in some detail, right? And you obviously know English, right? And all you really want to do is share the characterization with more fans.

So why aren't you doing something about it? Not that I think translating is easy either, but there are certain to be more people like you in the fandom, and if nothing more, summary and general discussion can't hurt.

Seriously, why isn't anyone translating drama CDs? People translate entire novels, anime and manga, but no drama CDs? >_> <_<

To be fair, I think translating text tends to be easier than audio. People most certainly do translate drama CDs, though, just not as commonly. I guess it doesn't have the same prestige as fansubbing, or somethin'?

It also seems like different fandoms tend to have very different attitudes towards translation as a whole, though. Even among smaller fandoms, there are ones where everyone seems to have forgotten that the concept of translation exists, and there are ones where any new material gets a rough translation somewhere within a week. It's weird.

Yes, part of the problem is definitely that megaten has a much smaller following that most. I wish that weren't so.

Why not ask a translator to? I'm in the midst of translating the SMT: Nocturne drama CD, but it's currently on hiatus due to lack of interest from fans (at least, vocally). I've never heard anyone calling for translators for the P3 CDs, only the manga and whatnot.

I'm not the biggest P3 fan, but if enough people were interested I'd do it, especially the Minato/Ryoji one. Ask a translator! We don't have psychic powers ;3.

Well I would do that, but personally, whenever I run into a blog/journal/whatever of a translator, it usually ends up following one of these scenarios:

1- The person has vanished off the face of the Internet and left unfinished projects.
2- Is doing something else and implies that isn't interested in doing anything else at the same time (and sometimes may not even be really all that interested in what they're doing at the moment)
3- Or they're no longer in the fandom that is relevant to my interests.

All this to say: I have bad luck when it comes to finding people on the Internet that do stuff that is relevant to my interest.

Aha, I knew someone would bring up that point.

But I just realized how stupid I was in posting this secret on a whim and now, I can't actually do those things without giving myself away...

Translating drama CDs is hard work, much harder than text. Also, I'm not confident in my ability enough for full-blown translations, though I do know enough Japanese to understand what's going on. Perhaps I'll post summaries later...when everyone forgets about this secret...whoops, there goes another sign.
