Mm, well. I think what it comes down to is specifically what part of P3 might have captivated someone enough to get them so interested in it. If the main draw was the fresh feeling of a modern setting with paranormal elements (as opposed to the sword/sorcery business that dominates the RPG market), or the way Megaten games tend to integrate their mythological references better than many other RPGs do, or the way the battle system emphasizes elemental weaknesses and rewards you for fighting smarter, not harder -- then I imagine they'd have a lot of incentive to hunt down the other Megaten games and give them a shot.

If, on the other hand, they're primarily attached to that specific set of characters, there'd be less incentive there, since IIR, P3 isn't directly tied by story or cast to any of the other games, so it makes sense that they'd be gravitating towards drama CDs with the cast they know and love; although they may still have an interest in the other games because they're hoping to get another strong, dynamic cast they can really get attached to, it's not a sure thing that the way hunting down more material with your existing favorites is. And if the big draw for them is the social link system, maybe they're just as likely to say screw the rest of the series, and instead sit down and wait for Persona 4.

Persona 3's popularity has caused a lot of people to check out the earlier games, and I think it's done good things for Megaten fandom as a whole (I haven't seen any direct statement on what prompted Atlus to reprint Nocturne, but I find it pretty likely that the increased awareness of Megaten that's resulted from P3's popularity is a part of it!). But while a lot of people may decide to delve into the series because of it, there are always going to be some people who just really like that game and don't necessarily feel motivated to go look for the rest because of it -- which I don't think is a bad thing. It's just different strokes for different folks.

(go go gadget tl;dr.)

Right, which I don't see why half the fandom abhors anything Megaten related except for Persona 2. I honestly don't see that much distinction between the games--the only significant changes being the commus and the art style. And while I'm elated for the new blood the fandom brought--believe me, I've done my fair share of trying to get people intrigued using that said game. I just don't understand where this sudden view of PERSONA 3 > ALL Megaten. Some arguments I've heard is the difficulty level and whatnot--which, honestly seem rather silly.

Don't get me wrong, I don't HATE Persona 3--I cosplay it for goodness's sake, however, I am getting rather annoyed with it's fanbrats. Which is a shame, even though it's not my personal favorite, I do value it very much.

Nocturne's getting re-released? Are you sure you're not thinking of Innocent Sin? I heard that maybe ported to the PSP...

...Ahaha, I do feel like I've drifted off from the original point, sorry...^^;;

Understandable! I guess I just haven't run into many P3 IS SUPERIOR AND I WILL PLAY NO OTHER types of fans, maybe.

And yeah, it's been pretty low profile, but Nocturne is indeed being reprinted (http://www.atlus.com/new_forum/viewtopic.php?t=996). Fantastic news for me, since I missed the original release and have been making frowny faces at the prices on eBay ever since. :3

Oh that's good news--I'm kind of sick of lending it to everyone I know. I don't know why I keep running into them, but really--they're making me one hair short of just vacating the fandom...*sigh*...

I'm really surprised at how fast that got out of print, but ah well, it's back. I'm happy.
