My perspective - and this is maybe shaped by a political science bias - but my perspective is that building stable structures that incentive good, positive, fruitful interactions and outcomes is insanely hard, especially ones that can last over significant periods of time. It's just really hard. Getting people to not be awful is a really, really hard problem. It's a lot easier to build a structure that people like than it is to build one that's genuinely fruitful.
