The new Star Trek movies. I'm so bummed that after so long, this is what we got. A few big, stupid action movies.

The fact that there is no, and might never be, a second anime season for Akatsuki no Yona.

The ending of the FMA manga. I may never get over that.

The fact that the SNK fandom got so shitty so fast. I wanted to be in it for the long haul, but that's not happening (also the manga got really bad, but that's another issue).

If we want good Star Trek movies they have to be given smaller budgets. the two best Trek movies, Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country were both made on non-blockbuster, relatively small, budgets. In fact UC's budget was so small it required some folks waiving normal fees to make it happen. Trek (and SF in general) needs to be unshackled from the blockbuster movie genre. It means smaller budgets and less FX, but that means better stories.

I am 100% here for slashing budgets for Hollywood films. I think they need to seriously drop the drama and effects and get back to cinematography and storytelling.

I don't mind the drama, it is the melodrama masquerading as drama that I object to.

Yeah, I didn't phrase things well. I meant the melodrama combined with OTT visual drama of everything exploding, or raising stakes so high as to be meaningless or arbitrary to make up for the fact that they didn't bother creating emotional stakes.
I want there to be real emotion.
It's not that I mind explosions, exactly, but they're so ubiquitous they stop meaning anything.

I agree with you about the first two new Trek movies, though I ended up enjoying the first one anyway. But Star Trek Beyond actually felt really Treky to me. Yes, it was an action movie, but it felt more like an action movie in line with the original series movies than the other two reboot movies.

Re: Fandom things you're bitter about

(Anonymous) 2016-10-22 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
It was less sucky than the first two, but that is about the best that can be said for it.

I enjoyed the first one as a silly action-flick-version of Star Trek, but the second one made me so angry that I got a lot more bitter towards the first.
I've heard the third is better, but I need to work up enthusiasm to try... maybe if they have it on an airplane on some flight or something.

I knoooooow.

I actually did like Beyond a hell of a lot more than the other two because it felt like the crew actually mattered outside of Kirk and Spock, but yeah, It's not the Trek I want it to be.

(Holding out some hope for the 2017 TV show but well... I've been burned before).

Ironic that Pine!Kirk is far more blase about the absolute massacre of his crew down to the few main characters in it than he was shown to be in the first two.

Idk I've found nu-Trek!Kirk pretty blase about anything that isn't himself in the movies, but at least for me the other characters cared which I liked.

nu!Kirk is kind of an asshole, and kind of nothing at all like Kirk actually was in TOS. He's like somebody took all the parody versions of Kirk from all the ages and decided to play it straight.

Yeah, I heard Beyond was better, but atm I'm just going back and rewatching the old stuff. It's more satisfying for me.

In part it's because I'm going to be a panelist at LosCon this year, and the theme is Star Trek! So I need to brush up :)

The Trek movies have always been more like action movies.

Excuse you, Star Trek IV.

Re: Fandom things you're bitter about

TMP wasn't.

Search for Spock and Final Frontier were unambiguously action movies, but Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country's claim to that are more dubious. Especially Undiscovered Country which was more a cold war drama in space, it was closer to an espionage drama than an action movie.

Re: Fandom things you're bitter about

(Anonymous) 2016-10-22 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that I'd call Final Frontier an action movie so much as I'd call it a trainwreck that had occasional action in it. You know, somewhere in between Row, Row Your Boat, Scotty smacking into the bulkhead and some really clunky philosophy discussions.

Yeah :( especially because I was looking forward to them... I even wonder if the new movies work for getting people into the older stuff - they're so different, so Hollywoody, that I don't know if the other Treks would appeal if somebody really liked those.
Though I am a believer in quality winning out at the end, so.

I'm with you on SNK. I haven't been happy with the way the series has been going (Mikasa never getting to evolve from pining love interest, all the women not getting the same growth as the male characters, convulated plot after convuated plot), but this last chapter really killed all the love I have left for the series. I will still be reading the series because I have devoted to much time not to see it to the end, but I am not expecting much and hoping it ends soon.

And I thought that since the hype from the anime had died down, that the fandom would be chill, but it is filled with so many piss babies. I try and still to just following stuff with my favorite characters (RBA), but even than I still cannot get away from all the assholes.

Re: Fandom things you're bitter about

[personal profile] ketita 2016-10-22 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
See, I think that SNK suffers from two major issues -
a) Isayama is inexperienced as a storyteller and is trying to write a story far more complicated than he knows how to, and

b) The story that Isayama ended up telling and the characters he put as mains are not actually the ones that interest him the most. He clearly has no idea what to do with Eren, and like you said, Mikasa is utterly wasted. He did a way better job with the adults in the Survey Corps, and quite a decent job with Levi imo (even if he seems allergic to actually writing character development, at least Levi gets like... scenes and events). And Armin, of course.
I really want to meet Isayama just to ask him "wtf r u doin".

The shipwars in this fandom are so stupid and so ridiculous :|
