I'm not sure which female characters specifically you're trying to bash here, but no one ever said male characters can't be jerks. BtVS had a bad habit of portraying said behavior as ideal, for example most of Joss's self-insert character Xander's story arc.

I'm not bashing any female characters in particular. I think BtVS had Angel, Oz, and Xander do foolish and hurtful things out of arrogance.

A more male-oriented show might have had female supporting cast behave that way, and maybe be seen as misogynistic. (I don't know what show. Hawaii Five-O, maybe.) Or if the female characters had strong fans, maybe it would be seen as feminist somehow. Focus matters.

But "ideal"?

Xander was deliberately written as an idiot. Just because the writer identifies with a character doesn't mean that character is a Mary Sue. Xander was intended to be kind of stupid and very flawed.

Oz, by contrast, was a near-ideal boyfriend until Seth Green left the show, and he had to be written out in favour of Tara.

Anyway, Xander was a fool. That's how he was written.

He was, but not all of the time. Like why write him as a complete buffoon, then have that heart to heart with Dawn is S7? I thought he was supposed to be a 'regular guy' stand in to contrast with Buffy being the Slayer?
