It was not as simple as that though. The child totally changed after the surgery. To me that meant the writers were saying that that species was not what Franklin had thought it was.

I really don't feel that the child changed after the surgery? Please explain why you think so.

You keep saying that, but so far you're the only one who thinks the child "totally changed." Can you, perhaps, provide an example?

Yeah, he 'changed' because he could finally breathe. We only see him when he's near death and immediately after he's been cured—we have no context for what his behavior is like normally. Of course he's going to act differently after the surgery. Also, he's excited because as he says himself, he still "feels the same" aka despite what he's been taught he still feels like his soul is inside his body. This is what he excitedly tries to tell his parents before they back out of the room. Like, you keep saying he "changed" as if it was some kind of sinister thing, when it's really just a kid who's been sick for a long time finally feeling better, and feeling thrilled that he's still himself despite what his religion teaches.
