I hate reader insert fics. My current fandom is full of them and I can't freaking stand it. Especially since this is one of those rare fandoms where pretty much everyone can be shipped with everyone since canon doesn't encourage any one pairing. You'd think people would be all over that, but no. Even worse is the fact that no one tags this crap. Or uses a header somewhere or puts things behind a cut. It's just 'BAM' suddenly 'you' are doing stuff with some random character. It might seem ridiculous but it kind of squicks me.

Until recently I blamed it on 'those damned youths' always ruining things, but then I found out someone I follow and who's in her late 20s, so only a few years younger than I am, loves the damn things and can't stand regular fic.

I hate them as well. No matter how many times someone says "you do this," it's not me. It's an insert of the author at the very most.

Exactly! They make no sense. Because no two people respond the same way, so maybe some readers can sort of find themselves in a certain fic, but most would probably react completely differently. So basically these are all fics from the POV of a terribly underwritten (usually female) OC. To come close to a true reader insert a fic would have to be incredibly vague or a very elaborate choose-your-own-adventure.

I never liked "Reader Insert" fic, because almost all of the time "I'm" so OOC that it takes me right out of the fic.
