Have you tried the Duncton Moles series of books by William Horwood? It is an epic Arthurian tragedy, only played out by moles.

It is pretty good, weird, but good.

I have, but to be honest, it goes a little too far in the other direction and is a bit dense. I loved Watership Down, though.
