I know, for someone who values such classic books as mentioned up-thread, it sounds like my library was missing something. Maybe it was? But of all of those mentioned up-thread, the only ones that I recognise is the Waterbabies (and then only vaguely), and the Wizard of Oz, which for a long time I didn't even know had more after the first book. I probably would have read them if I'd had any access to them.
But mostly, I went from being reluctant to read much straight into reading mature novels at the age of 11. My first author was Steven Lawhead, who I admit is probably not well known. My second was David Eddings, because I spotted a display of "The Diamond Throne" when it was first released and thought the blurb looked interesting. David Eddings was a good author to grow up reading IMO.
