When I was in this fandom people were so decisive about every choice Sam OR Dean made; from any given scene some faction would extract the message that brother A was the worst, most abusive person of imaginable, and brother B was the best, most self-sacrificing brilliant amazing person imaginable. And again and again and again. In the end, the show is so insulated and bizarre it's almost impossible to pass objective judgement on either of their actions past around season 3 or 4.

What do you mean by "objective judgment"? Because going on 12 seasons, I'm still perfectly capable of judging them for their behavior - good, bad and well-intentioned.

I literally just mean it's hard to judge them outside of the context of the show/their insanely complicated pasts and relationship.

Using context isn't being unobjective though? It's how we SHOULD judge people.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
this only applies (a) in real life or (b) in shows that aren't so convoluted and self contradictory that the people writing it have forgotten the context themselves

this. that's why I only hang around people in the supernatural fandom who either like both brothers equally or prefer one brother but are still positive about the other one. otherwise, the straw grasping and reaching that hardcore sam!girls and dean!girls do drives me nuts

Now the fans just blame Castiel for everything! Very convenient
