It's because the folks on both sides of these endless arguments are too dumb to deal with moral complexity and flawed characters. The show isn't even terribly complicated as shows go, but here we are. It's an epic love story about this crazy, awful, beautiful, hilarious family relationship, but sure, let's go ahead and disregard pretty much the whole canon to decide this one brother is a worthless piece of shit that the other brother puts up with because he's a poor abused woobie who's perfect in every way. I'd like to see these people get dropped into the story and try to explain their position to either character, or to anyone they've ever been close to. The reactions would be priceless, lol. A lot of it is about overidentifying with one of them and taking everything way too personally, long past the point where the brothers have forgiven each other for whatever happened, if they ever had a problem with it in the first place. It's very popular in fandom to sneer at forgiveness and redemption and throw characters on the pyre for anything they do that's even slightly questionable, it's exhausting. Or it's about which one they think is cuter, which has happened in most fandoms I've been in. It's so amazing how whichever character you find most attractive inevitably turns out to be the most morally upstanding and flawless and the woobiest woobie of all time.
