This is sort of related, but if I can have a picture of something, sometimes that's enough for me. Like I love toys and memorabilia collecting, but if I can get a book that has photos of those things instead, I'm content. Consequently I have a lot of doll collecting magazines...same with artwork, I don't need the original painting on my wall if I can look at a reproduction of it in a nice book.

But yeah, I save a lot of money on collecting that way lol. There are only one or two fandoms where I feel like "I need the actual toy of this".

Ask people to get you this stuff for birthdays and holidays?

You are a better person than I OP, I just get jealous. :(

I can relate to this, OP. I want to get into collecting vintage Star Wars, Kenner's DC Super Powers and Raiders of the Lost Ark action figures, but it's a very pricey hobby as you've said. Too bad I'm not in Texas anymore, as there's a local Star Wars store that sells everything Star Wars (especially the vintage ones that I want to collect), called Order 66 Toys.

However, I could recommend you to Retroblasting. They're a really cool channel that talks about vintage toys and how to repair/restore them and stuff.

I know that feel, OP. I'm into... well, too many potentially super-expensive hobbies for someone as poor as I am, but most of it is under the toy/game collecting umbrella. Between high-end and out-of-production toys and models to the euro-style board games, I spend a lot of time looking but not touching.

I'm glad you can get that secondhand enjoyment out of watching others enjoy their purchases, I like doing that, too. Seeing the things I love in the hands of someone else who clearly loves them and sharing in their happiness is definitely something, even if I can't afford to go out and find a similar thing for my own shelf.
