the deaths that were so much worse than you assumed and it breaks everyone's hearts

What like they were mutilated and/or raped?

This is pretty much de rigeur edgelord shit in comics and vidya.

Nah, that's standard like you said.

I was meaning more like the guy's all "they murdered my wife and daughter" but it was part of a systematic genocide that slowly starved everyone to death and he went a little crazy after he had to eat them both after they died to live

I don't know if I'd give that a pass, that seems like edgelord tier two.

Edge Emperor, if you will.

If you say. I mean, I was imagining like holocaust conditions with an insane late-50s crazy hobo, not a guy who is badass and good looking. More like Old Man Henderson than Whitey Stubble Mc30yearold so I don't think edge applies too much but ymmv

Late-50s crazy hobo is departing from the teenaged-to-mid-30s audience of video games and entering the territory of Dad Movies such as Taken and every other late-50-something former action hero who still manages to kick the ass of much younger men and Defend/Avenge his womenfolk because goshdarnit those womenfolk are just so keen on dying and men are only motivated by a singular purpose and that is to breed and/or defend their offspring (note: only applies to female offspring, male offspring have dicks with which they can defend themselves).

I am so jaded and sick of this trope even a holocaust wouldn't move me at this point. Unless it was, like, a real one that actually happened and not something an author invented just so his hobo could have Sad Feels that Men Are Allowed to Have (tm) (but they still have to be angry).

Fuck this trope.

AYRT

Tbh, I feel the same way as you, but I think I'm having trouble describing what I'm picturing in my head in words. It's not like those movies and I'm not picturing the guy winning or kicking ass at all anyway, more like pathetically railing against the system and murdering mooks violently without actually changing anything and quiet despair all around. Rarely are heroes portrayed as pathetic and that's something I'd like to see I guess.

I think this is where we get into the "what's the difference between a hero and a protagonist" right. Heroes are supposed to be someone we look up to; shitty protagonists abound.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-29 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose. On the other hand, one can be a failed hero as well. I wasn't imagining a badass power fantasy from the start, which is where it got lost, I think. The guy in question wasn't supposed to be the main character, I was imagining it as one of the companions in the party the hero keeps wanting to kick out. I suppose that wasn't obvious. I'm a little woozy on medicine right now, sorry.

Yeah no worries. I was confused because there are people who do think that aging up the protagonist is somehow subverting this trope and I got lost in the weeds there.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-29 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm on the same boat as you, all 20-50 white generic badass register similarly to me Half the time the only difference is palette swapping the hair to be grayer and they all have the builds and faces of 20 year olds anyway which gets weird. They also all have tragic pasts but don't have any of the real symptoms of extreme emotional trauma either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think what I may really be looking for is something that addresses what a sad and unhelpful response "imma murder them all" usually is, and how in reality one person vs the system can't murder enough to make a difference if they tried

Edge Emperor, lol.
But you're right, things have gotten so grimdark that everything just looks edgy at this point... It's probably worth considering what elements would actually restore the story to being truly emotional, rather than just edgy for edginess' sake.
... probably not being part of a video game that lets you shoot everything in sight? idk.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-29 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
For me it's a lack of heroes feeling truly pathetic when they should. We're told they're helpless but Whitey Stubble Mc30yearold like I said above is super strong with super skills and lol? Give me an older feebler crazy guy who is railing with no real effect at all against the baddies and I'll feel way worse for him than the antihero. Real desperation is when the characters aren't winning all the time

I think it would be incredibly easy to restore the emotional impact.

I have a friend who fucking loves the edgelord shit. Eats it up with a spoon. The grimmer, grittier, the better. I took him to see The Road after telling him "it's a post-apocalyptic story were a man protects his son" - right up his alley right. He was wrecked by the end of it. Like, near tears.

Turns out grim 'n gritty's only fun when it's actually just a power fantasy, and the edge is window dressing to make your protagonist That Much More Hardcore and what happened to his (female) Double Plus Bad.

Yeah, but that's why I said that I think the problem at least ties somewhat into the type of video game. FPS, and many other video games are about wish fulfillment, so it makes sense that they're not really working that.
I know there are plenty of more experimental games that aren't the standard, though (at least so I hear, I'm not much of a gamer XD)
