Nice. By your standards, because I grew up on the real classics (Saint-Saens, Bach, Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff, etc.) I'm musically retarded, too. Y'know what I have to say to that? Learn Baroque composers. Learn Classical and Romantic composers. Learn the people who developed the musical forms that evolved into modern rock and roll. Because from where I stand right now, you're just as musically retarded as she is.

I think s/he (okay, probably a chick, it's the SPN fandom) is just trying to point out the hypocrisy of fangirling something you know nothing about - AND REFUSING TO LEARN. It'd be like fangirling Smallville but claiming you hate the whole superheroe genre.. except for the supers who appear in the show, and ONLY the way they appear in the show. Fair enough, but everyone else thinks you are kind of a tard.

The OP is assuming certain things are common knowledge when they aren't. Did she stop to think that HI, maybe her friend grew up in a different situation than she did and maybe never got exposed to classic rock? That assumption sounds pretty retarded to me.

That's not hypocritical, seriously. It's completely possible to really like one thing in a genre (Smallville) but hate everything else in it. Who says you need to learn everything about it, anyway? If you like it, you like it.

Did you read the secret lol? If a song from the show comes on and her friend is like "YEAH AWESOME" and then another song from the SAME ARTIST comes on and the friend goes "turn off this crap" I can see how that would get really annoying....

And yeah, it's possible to just like one part of a genre (like just liking the current trend of superhero movies without being a comics geek) but if you act like everything else in that genre is crap, I can see how you're going to piss off other fans who like MORE than just that one slice. I think the SP's problem is more that her friend is hostile about it ("she hates all the music I love") but then suddenly things are acceptable if they're used by this show that's annoying her. Like, your "bff" likes something, it's still crap, your fav char likes something, suddenly it's amazing... Kind of dumb.

I'd understand that if it was the same song. That would be really irritating. But it's possible to not like every song a band does.

Although I agree that you don't have to like or know everything about a genre, it seems pretty logical to me that if you are going to like a handful of songs by a band you are most likely going to enjoy their other songs.
Or rather if you say you like the songs on SPN but absolutly hate the rest of classic rock is a bit lame.
You seem quite defensive about this. Don't fret about it. Its only music. There is plenty to go around to all and there is no need to get all stressed about it. =)

I'm pretty musically ignorant. I love the music on Supernatural - I like the sound of most classic rock I've heard, in fact - but I know next to nothing about it. I wouldn't be able to name the drummer for any song from the show. Or the singer. Or, in an embarrassing number of cases, the band. (I'm even worse on modern music. You don't want me on your pub quiz team.)

I don't think not knowing the background of the music on the soundtrack impairs my enjoyment or understanding of the show.

For the most part, I am not a fan of horror. I don't watch Supernatural to be scared; I watch it for the brothers and the relationship between them. I watch it for the themes of family and love and loyalty, and because it has a sense of humour even when it's putting its characters through hell. I don't think that makes me a 'lesser' fan than someone who watches out of a love for horror, or even than someone who watches for all those reasons and loves horror as well.

As long as you love the show, I don't think there are wrong reasons.

Seriously, though, I hope the secret-poster can forgive her friend. The reasons aren't wrong! They're just different!

I agree with you completely that everyone has a different upbringing and it's unfair to mock someone for not knowing something you know. In terms of the secret, though, I think the secret maker was more annoyed at the double standards of the friend than anything else.
