I don't understand why people have to ship characters, rather than just accept things as friendship/one sided love.
Because it will most likely never happen. For me, I ship certain characters because of 1) personality, 2) (possible) chemistry and 3) interaction (if any). Meh, it doesn't help that Amano herself admitted she panders to the BL fans once in a while. It's really fun to ship, but I think a vast majority understand that their pairing will never be canon. It's more fun than anything, although some people can be passionate about it. Much like a favorite character of sorts, really.

Plus most fans like romance more than friendship and one-sided love. Besides, I think there isn't much friendship fics because Amano does it so well and we get alot of them in canon.

I was thinking of fandoms in general, not just this one. Everything I read or watch... people obsess over different pairings. If I'm familiar with the material, most of the time I won't really see it, and ship manifesto essay things do little to change my mind. I often see them as people interpreting things so that they fit their ship. For Reborn I just see Gokudera as somebody who is so determined to protect and help Tsuna that he lost sight of everything else. I don't see that as love, or anything... it's just Gokudera doing what he is supposed to do even if he got a little blinded by it.

I'm not saying I never ship anything because I certainly do but 9 times out of 10 I don't really dwell on it for very long because 9 times out of 10 it has nothing to do with the plot. I nearly always ship people because I like the idea of it, rather than I think it will ever actually happen.

I don't think this made a lot of sense but I don't know how to get my point across.

For Reborn I just see Gokudera as somebody who is so determined to protect and help Tsuna that he lost sight of everything else.

And that's not normal, even by subordinate terms. I'm not saying it is love, but it can be interpret that way and it can be a logical deduction. Gokudera's world is basically revolves around Tsuna. Even non-slash Reborn fans can admit Gokudera's deep loyalty and admiration for Tsuna is pretty intense. dual_avi's manifesto points that well although I personally disagree that Gokudera can't love someone else. It would be hard for him to keep a girl because he will always, always put Tsuna first and foremost in all of his relationships (and that's why if he does end up with anyone, it would be Haru because she's the only one I can see who can understand that).

If you don't see it, you just don't and there's nothing wrong with that. Hell, even as a slash fan, for the life of me can't see the plausibility other than than emotionless hate sex of MukuHiba pairing to be honest (and that's even a stretch and not because people think Hibari is asexual [which most people don't know what an asexual is anyway]). Most likely because they don't register to be a plausible pairings. Hell, I see TsunaKyoko pretty forced as well since we are to believe that they will be together at one point and that attraction is believable (Tsuna looks like he's more infatuated with Kyoko than actually likes her, and Kyoko always sends mixed signals). It's hard to support a relationship with someone who basically no more than the token "trophy" girl because we rarely see Kyoko (except in the current arc and that became rare real quick) and she never really had a real personality as of yet other being a nice girl. Maybe I'm tired of series like that. I wish TsunaHaru was more likely to be canon to be honest since Haru had more character than Kyoko does in spades and I like their current and possible interactions together. Maybe because Tsuna and Kyoko are too similar and boring that not even that they look cute together doesn't cut it for me. Don't get me wrong, I love both characters and desperately wish that Kyoko will someday somehow subvert the cliche she's following now and make this most likely canon pairing something to get behind to.

It's not like most people come in fandom with the intent to pair up people in their fandom. I don't and have a good number of series where I don't see that work at all or like only canon pairings. It usually take certain events, personality compatibility, and all that jazz to ship a certain couple, canon or no. It's not like the stereotype that they ship because they look hot or appeared on the same screen once all of the time or something.

Also, you actually answer why people ship yourself: I nearly always ship people because I like the idea of it, rather than I think it will ever actually happen.

Shippers KNOW that their ship never be canon most of the time and are content writing and drawing situations what it would be like IF the ship was canon. They might get a bit too passionate about it, but I think a majority knows it will never be canon but it's fun to fantasize if it was anyway.

Like I said earlier, it's not that far apart from having a favorite character. Like some people like this character for the same reason why others hate him and don't know why this certain people like this character the best.

I won't deny, it does seem a little extreme, to be that devoted to somebody. I think it seems so strong because (up to where I am, anyway) you don't see a great deal of him doing stuff that can't be linked back to Vongola or Tsuna. It's not difficult to come to such a conclusion based on what we see of him I suppose. Even if he were in love with him, I just don't see it as being romantic or sexual. It seems closer to idolatry ): idkidk I have a habit of trying to explain things away where love is the last option. Emotionless hate sex is awesome, but I could see Hibari with girls or boys. I think most of the popular pairings aren't very plausible, though I don't think that should stop people from enjoying them.

It is kind of a shame Kyoko doesn't have a bigger part, I really like her! I would agree that it is closer to infatuation but he still likes her no matter what. I do really like Haru too, but the love triangle thing makes it all complicated. Either would be nice to see happen, but I guess he needs somebody who fully appreciates what his life will become like and the risks involved.

Maybe I've had too many bad experiences with shippers, but I've just seen too many people over the years try and convince me their pairing will be canon even when they haven't got a shred of evidence. I'm just wary of them I guess, plus I only have 2 fandom friends so it is hard to change my attitude I think. When I read/watch something thinking about who makes a good couple isn't on my mind, I usually like to see things develop as they are unless romance is a big part of the plot. But sometimes I find myself saying I think so and so would make a good couple. Wfhfdss I'm finding it difficult to make my point here :/
