Did thelesbianfuturist write this? This kind of weird, vaguely annoying, I-can't-put-my-finger-on-it maybe-trolling sort of thing definitely seems like them. (Him? Her?)

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank god someone else noticed! I thought maybe I was being oversensitive.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we please not do the thing where someone's being annoying and we refuse to shut the fuck up about them and harass them and bring them up in unrelated threads

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What? This is the first time anyone's even acknowledged that they're annoying, I thought? How is that harassment?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There's been a few other discussions in GC recently

I'm not trying to yell at anyone I just get edgy about these things

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If people have been talking about them, I didn't notice; I haven't been in the GC recently?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The GC comments were direct replies to (annoying) threads they started. I think that's fair.

I don't know the author from a hole in the wall, but what's distinctly male about using the term catfight when women are fighting? I've seen that term a lot, and not just from men.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The term implies hair-pulling, name-calling, and generally not being that serious. Punching someone in the face goes way beyond that, and when the term is used in that context, it's usually minimizing--"Oh, those silly women and their squabbles!"

Re: OP

But women use 'catfight' all the time.

Not really? I've never heard a woman use this term. I do find it offensive generally, and very telling of a person's world view.

Re: OP

I use catfight and I am a woman. I also add a "Rowr" sound with fake claw motions.

That sounds...sarcastic & cute :)

You...must not hang out with a lot of women, lmao. Almost every woman I know has dropped the term "catfight" at least once to describe women fighting women.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am a woman, would never use it and nor do any of the many women I know. So, "lmao", your anecdata doesn't trump mine.

Woman here. I've used it.

Yeeeaaah, while I don't use the term, a lot of my female friends do.

What are you on about? Every character in that book had a (realistic to them) goal that they thought would improve their lives.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I finished Girl with All the Gifts about a week ago, and I wouldn't describe it like that. All the characters seemed to have pretty idealistic goals for living in a world where nobody's life could possibly be really good.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like the same thing I was saying. One's got a goal that she doesn't know is impossible, and one's got a goal that she's flailing futilely to find a way to make possible, and one's got a goal that's so blatantly impossible that she comes across as delusional . . . The last time I saw this many characters grasping at this many straws was Sine Mora (or as I like to describe it, that game where one of the characters is a survivor of rape and cancer being blackmailed with information that would get her thrown in a concentration camp.) It didn't feel tragic; it just felt like piling on.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a post apocalyptic book, of course it will be a downer.

But everyone's goal IS realistic from their POV. It isn't their fault they don't know what everyone else is thinking or the future.

So many secrets about The Walking Dead suddenly make sense now.

He's doing it to distinguish from his comic work, I assume. I haven't read The Girl with all the Gifts but the women in Lucifer were pretty great.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just disappointed he seems to have shelved his Felix Castor books when he just had basically one left to go.
