Please don't and don't do it for Scotty either. It's beyond annoying as it somehow assumes that the American-sounding characters don't have accents, which they most certainly do to the ears of non-Americans. We know what everyone sounds like anyway - phonetic dialogue is just distracting. If you focus on getting everyone's typical syntax and vocabulary right, you'll capture their voices fine.

This. Too much dialect can be really distracting even when done properly. When it's not done properly... the horror!

Thanks for the replies! I was cringing already at the thought of doing the accents, but I don't think I've seen them done without the accents very often? Hence my question, because I loathe the written accents.

Also phonetic accents are kinda racist. Imagine typing out the dialect of a black man in circa 1880s USA phonetically. Or a Chinese Laborer in The Old West and typing out the mixed L's and R's? How many sentences do you manage before starting to feel icky?

Oh Lord, yes. I have seen some attempts at phonetically writing Scots that made me want to stab something, eve in otherwise well written fix, and it's just awful. Especially when the dialect bits are so wrong they aren't even grammatical (the writers of TOS didn't know much about Scots, but at least they got the syntax right).
