IMO fanart is probably more acceptable than fanfic even these days. If I could sketch characters' likenesses like nothing, I'd have no problem showing an actor or a creator. It only takes a second for them to look at it and go "hey, neat" or whatever.

But fanfiction? Fuck no. Unless I have it confirmed from ten reliable sources that an individual has a hard dick for fanfiction, I would not admit to writing it. IMO it's still something where the investment is in kind of a gray area. If you drew a picture of an actor in his superhero outfit, that's not weird or creepy, it's flattering. But show him fifty pages of something you wrote where his character is doing things... uhhh no. Even if the content itself isn't creepy.
