I don't think there was anyone, ever, who referred to him as Bones, it was always just the captain. I agree it's completely ridiculous when other characters in fics do it. Also, Lenny and Leo are even worse, I don't think those were ever used in the show

People have definitely called him Leonard, but never a shortened version of that, no.

Non-canon nicknames bug me even more than having the wrong characters use a nickname. There are certainly times you can justify it in a fic (maybe an OC childhood friend) but it's OOC for the regular characters and just feels jarring and weird.

Yeah, "Leonard" is fine, that's definitely been used. Still, I'd think you'd have to be pretty close to him to call him that.

I could see "Lenny", but only if it was someone wanting to get a rise out of him or being deliberately over-familiar.
