I'm sure it came from a place of encouragement as in, "Yes you should go forth and write original fiction if that's your jam!"

You've never feigned interest in someone's hobbies because it's polite as a friend?

And like I said, maybe they had every intention of buying something that OP put out, and then OP put out something that they just weren't interested in. Friendship doesn't obligate them to buy something they've no interest in, even if previously they'd said, "Hey I'd buy it." It's not a binding contract.

This. I have a friend who is a decently well-known YA author, and I've bought some of her books but not others because not everything she's written has been stuff that has interested me.
