(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 02:32 am (UTC)(link)One is "find-replace" fic, where it's a fic I've already read with names and maybe hair and eye color changed. And often, well, the story wasn't great fic to start with because if a name and hair color change was all that's needed to avoid copyright infringement, the fic was already so AU or OOC as to be original fic in all but name to start with.
The other kind, well, these are rarer--I've seen two authors actually publish original fic that's, well, original. In neither case did I buy their stuff, although if I can get my hands on a print copy I may eventually cave and buy something from one of them. She wrote tons of amazing fic for my OTP. I'm not a big slash fan and really not a military history/war story fan. Her books are military sci-fi and the main characters are a gay couple. I had read some of her slash fanfic, but it didn't involve a military setting. Her writing is so good that I may eventually cave but I just really dislike military sci-fi with the exception, so far, of Bujold. And I wouldn't find the porn hot, and I don't know the characters already.
The other author writes tons of fic for my OTP, too. Still does, actually. And I really love some of it while finding some of it squicky as hell. I just comment on the stuff I like and backbutton out of what I don't. Her original stuff, though, is all romance novels. And one thing I like about my OTP is that they're not really romance novel cover material, because one of them's older and would not get away with the romance novel cover naked posing thing.
From the samples of her original stuff I've read, in order to reach a wider audience, a lot of the physical idiosyncrasies that I liked about my OTP (not, like, stuff I found hot because it was a kink or whatever, just, indications that they were normal people and not perfect marble gods with sculpted ass-cheeks) went poof. And once characters who look like underwear models start whining about how unlucky in love they are, my eyes glaze over. And I'm not a big BDSM fan, and some of her original work has a lot of that.
So I read the synopses of any new books she puts out, read the samples, and keep hoping one will have at least one normal looking person as part of the main couple, preferably without power play stuff so I can buy it and enjoy it.
