Apparently he was expelled from Hogwarts.

Not that he isn't smart but that kind of surprised me.

That's fine, but it bores me to have intelligence emphasized over teamwork and making brave choices, personally. I'm not particularly smart, so I prefer average protagonists who I can actually aspire to be like without winning a genetic lottery.

Intelligence isn't a genetic lottery. A perosn doens't ave to be a one in a million genius to consider their options before making a "brave choice".

Isn't that pretty common?

Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes come immediately to mind. But a lot of heroes in fiction today are smart, though they don't know everything because most people have specific areas of expertise, so they sometimes surround themselves with other smart people with different areas of expertise.
