First let me say that I have never thought Shakespeare was the best thing ever. I find his plays, though very good, to be over-played, and I personally think he's held on a pedestal that is far too high. I believe that many of his self-proclaimed "fans" simply like him because they believe it makes them look intelligent.
That said, let me also say that the hatred I have reserved for Mr. Charles Dickens is his alone - and I have never hated another author as much as I despise him. I find him to be exceptionally long-winded; he weaves such an intricate tapestry of adjectives that by the end of the sentence, the reader's forgotten what he's even describing in the first place. In Great Expectations, the man went on for a paragraph as to why his character's name was "Pip" for Christ's sake. I could rant about that for much longer, but I won't.
Long story short, I agree that many Shakespeare fans are pretentious, I must admit that my opinion on Dickens fans differs very little. In all honesty (and I know that as an English major I'll get hung out to dry for this), I find most "classic literature" to be highly overrated. Hawthorne, Shakespeare, Dickens...to be honest literature doesn't start to truly interest me until about the mid-1860s, when Mark Twain came onto the scene and used plain English in his books, rather than the ultra-flowery wordplay that those prior had done.
Regard me as you wish - I know most people look down on me for disliking everyone's ostentatious favourites, but I don't really care. Thank you, and good night.

The double standard where Dickens - who was a commercial hack - is okay but commercialized modern writing is not is why I'm hating academia now :(
I just like Shakespeare for his characters. Lulz, cry moar, Hamlet Prince of the Emos
