As time went by, though, I saw more and more people posting there to make a name for themselves as a Sue Hunter or what the hell ever, or because it was cool, or out of vendetta, out of bile, etc, etc, etc. The cool, funny, mature people stopped posting, people stopped using the template and instead just posted links going "BLARGH SUE ALERT!". Eventually it got to the point that Harry Freakin' Potter was posted as a Gary Stu! (Newsflash, guys - main characters HAVE to be more interesting than the other chars, IT'S THEIR JOB)
Then you got things like the Mary Sue Litmus Test (http://www.springhole.net/quizzes/marysue.htm), that people swore by (but was hopelessly broken - come on, people, a regular Dynasty Warriors character, NOT EVEN AN IMPORTANT ONE, can score a 30-something and not even try! Buffy the Vampire Slayer SCORES 117!), and it eventually just became a self-perpetuating fandom of its OWN.
tl;dr, the whole mentality is warped now, write wtfever you want to.
It was the stupid Litmus Test...
