My dude liking what you like about what you like makes you a fan, and nothing more. I'm sorry you've been made to feel shitty for no good reason.

I could've written this secret, anon. In fact I think I might've done a long while ago (although it may have been just in my head, I can't remember). And what kills me is that when Pirates 5 was first announced, Jack Davenport's name was on the credits on imdb. False hope is the fucking worst.

God I love you, Norrie. Excuse me, I need to go drown my sorrows in some heavy duty Sparrington.

You're fine. I think most fans agree killing Norrington was stupid. And the movies keep going downhill.

I gotta admit I don't understand why that character became such a big deal to some people, but hey, there's no wrong way to be a fan.

In the first movie, because he was smart and honourable and brave and funny, despite being an antagonist. In the sequels, because he was scruffy and tragic and doubly funny and complicated and betrayed people and then redeemed himself with one hell of a bang. Or at least, that was why for me. Also, the man looks good in uniform. That helps.

This. He had more nuance (an antagonist who has valid reasons to feel justified in his positions that are opposed to the MCs) to start, and then he went on a full developmental arc after that. he changed, and showed it. Jack is fun, but he doesn't change his habits/beliefs.

Personally it's because I had a crush on Jack Davenport from Coupling, and also because I can never resist a protag/antag pairing (Sparrow/Norrington).

Why wasn't Norrington/Beckett more popular? That hit all my kinks.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Norrington was my favorite too. I often latch onto background characters. I don't dislike main characters but there's something about characters with less screen-time or canon devoted to them that I find intriguing.

I've felt the same though, especially with my rare pairs where people tell me that I'm only shipping the rare character because it allows me to basically use them as an OC, which is never how I see it. There's something about them that I like; I'm not trying to sneak an OC into a fic.

I ignore that he's dead - mainly because the one webcomic I read religiously has him very much alive and gave him one hell of a story arc

Roommates by AsheRyder on DA. I can not rec that comic enough [Phantom, Javert, Norrington, Jareth as roommates in an apartment complex - with Sarah and Christine living a few doors down]

I only vaguely know the fandom, but I agree with the sentiment. You're allowed to be upset when your favorite character dies/leaves/whatever. You're definitely allowed to stop watching and it doesn't make you a bad fan.

There's something similar going on in my own fandom right now and what bugs me most is that I know a lot of the people saying this are people who'd absolutely flip if their own fave left.

TRUE FANS LOVE NORRIE <3

Honestly tho, I was only ever in it for Jack, and I want them to stop. They could have stopped at 1, but if they had, I wouldn't have been able to appreciate disgraced debauched rumpot former Commodore Norrington (which is my favorite Norrington).

Enjoy yourself, OP! I'll enjoy with you (I loved Gillette)

OT:
What's the current fanspace like for PotC? It was where I first started, but the board I used to go on died around 2008. :C

Norrington was always my favourite in the films, especially when scruffy! And I love his voice. I have little-to-no interest without him.
