Same, OP, same.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Add me in, too. I've been screwed too many times by tv shows so I always spoil myself on books and movies.

"Awful person" is quickly becoming one my berserk buttons.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Typical usage seems to be along the lines of "you have not lived up to my expectations so you are an awful person."

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh?

What is this trolly asshole response for?

SA
Whoops. Misfire. Should have been in next thread.

I love downer endings EXCEPT in fanfic. That is my happy place.

It's funny, I'm the exact opposite. Fanfic can do whatever the hell it wants to the characters, because at the end of the day it's not canon. But if canon fucks it up for me, then often I just don't want anything else to do with the work, and go off to find something else. It's rare that a true downer ending will make me crave fandom.

Same.
I'm also not someone who enjoys 'fix it' fics (unless it's something really minor), cause if it's broken in canon, then it's broken.

I like reading "fix it" fics, but it still doesn't unbreak what canon broke.

I guess I just expect canon media to be sad. Too much time reading sad books and watching sad shows.

I just don't like the anxiety.

I'm indifferent to downer endings (unless they're really well done) but I do enjoy seeing at least someone make it through to the end, even if it's not explicitly a happy ending.

I hate spoilers, but I sort of get it, I'm not a fan of grimdark endings.

Haha, I'm the same. I really only do this for horror movies though! I think if I'm really scared/anxious going into the movie, knowing what the major scare points will be helps me prepare a little more. I still enjoy the movie a lot, I just feel safer somehow.

And yeah, with fiction in general, if it has a downer ending that really ruins the whole work for me. I need to know things turn out somewhat ok, or are at least hopeful.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-02 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I started doing this for a lot of horror movies. I watched way too many "rocks fall, everybody dies" horror movies, and got really tired of that. There are films where that works with the story, but a lot of times, it just feels like a cheap grimdark ending. So if I'm iffy on watching the movie, I'll check to see that someone lives past the ending.

I'm mostly tired of the "and then they defeated the evil monsters... or DID THEY??!" trope ending. Like yes, sure, they try to give this lingering sense of dread that the monsters aren't as dead and defeated as the surviving protagonists think and it might be a popular 'twist' (also to keep the option for sequels open) but it's so overdone.

I also always feel kind of cheated that all that work and suffering we see characters doing over the course of a movie was for nothing. It's boring.

This is why both Alien and Aliens are so rewarding.
