Your old writing

How do you feel when you look at things you wrote years ago?

It's the first day of NaNoWriMo and I got thinking of my first year and that first "novel" I wrote when I was 16. It's terrible and I love it. I think it's adorable. The mistakes don't really bother me. I like knowing how much I've improved.

I have two reactions. For stuff I wrote as a kid, I generally think that it's adorable. (Especially when all I could bring myself to say was that my characters did "it" - yes, with quotes)

For my stuff I wrote since a teen, I mostly see my improvement. I still like the ideas I had and some of the dialogue, and overall, they're still readable. But there's definitely parts that need tweaking and I like having a marker of where I was and where I am now to help hone what I want my writing to be. It's a good way to remind myself what works and what doesn't. I'm not embarrassed by the stuff I've posted.

My stuff I wrote in the Potter fandom, other than a few drabbles, is awful. I like most of the stuff I've written for the Tolkien fandom, though the first Angbang fic I wrote now doesn't fit my headcanons about the relationship at all.

My old writing is pretty cringeworthy. The storylines weren't too good and their grounds on canon were shaky. The Harry Potter fic I wrote back after book 5 makes me wince reading it - it's pretty blatant wish fufillment about reviving Sirius.

All of my ideas are on the "are you sure you weren't on drugs?" side of creativity, and my memory is awful, so when I go back to my old work it's like, "I thought of this? Was I on drugs?? Am I absolutely certain I have never been on drugs, because what the fuck?"

...So, I had one story idea I was planning on writing up until last night. I was drawing a blank on it when it came down to midnight, though. Then I took a look at my last stab at NaNo from 2014, (over 37,000 words and a personal best) and I...really liked it? To the point that I decided to put my other idea on the backburner and start rewriting the previous NaNo story.
