What does virtue signalling mean?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-02 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this phrase cropping up in messages from the anti-social justice mob a lot in the last two weeks. Did some internet personality use it recently to attack someone? Is it a real phrase they are misunderstanding or misappropriating or something that just got made up? When the same phrase suddenly crops up in different places but in the same basic way of attacking people, I got to be suspicious.

Any info?

I think it's like namedropping and humblebragging, except with good things you do that supposedly make you better people than others? I don't know for sure

'virtue signaling' is the idea that, basically, sometimes people do things just because they're concerned about looking like a good person and for no other reason. Believe it comes out of economics. It's a valid idea but it gets overused. It's popular among a lot of anti-SJW places, the alt right, etc because it can explain away literally any ideology they disagree with.

Specifically, I think it comes out of one of the George Mason economic professor technocrat-liberal-libertarian blogs, but I can't remember if it's Tyler Cowen or Robin Hanson

Also, all of the people who want to rant about Less Wrong and the rationalists and the alt right should probably pay more attention to the George Mason crowd and the Hbd people, because all this stuff has been around.

I've only seen it used wrt the current rise of puritanical fic beliefs, like, people reblogging "oh noes CHILD PORN" type of blogs without actually thinking critically about what they're posting (looking at you, Voltron fandom), because it'll make them look better/more superior.

I've heard this term used for a few years now, ever since it became so trendy to be progressive, so that everyone's on a 24/7 mission to prove to everyone else how progressive they are. It's like a moral version of keeping up with the Joneses.

It's also used a fair amount in REAL social justice discourse (meaning not tween sjw bloggers, but actual social workers talking about real-world problems). I've seen it used in those spheres for probably four or five years now, coinciding with the rise of "allies" doing their level best to take over SJ spaces, and with people using their smorgasbord of minority identities as some sort of trump card.

Social justice movements are prime targets for people who want to score brownie points for being a good person without actually doing anything. It's "look at how enlightened I am, I have a gay best friend!" when really they're just using him as an accessory. Or even "don't talk to me about the racism you experience, I'm black AND gay AND also native american so I'm automatically right."

I know I have seen mention of it on some of the anti-SJW Youtube videos I have watched, mainly in response to that "Reasonable Questions of Anti-SJWs" video that's been going around and in particular the questions about stopping bullying by their audiences. To be specific, at least one anti-SJW respondent said "why do we need to be constantly virtue-signaling?".
