(spoilers for FFVII ahead)
Yeah, one of my favorite things about Cloud was that he was so different from your typical JRPG hero. He's definitely my favorite and the most memorable. I love that he was such a loser that he invented this whole new backstory about himself and got so invested in it that he literally went catatonic when he remembered the truth. But then in the end he pulls through and becomes a truly kickass human being who stands on his own and doesn't need to lie to himself. That's cool as hell. (I know some people would interpret his story differently but that's how I interpret it because it's the most entertaining to me)

It's a valid interpretation!
And I agree with you, that's part of why I liked him as well. That moment where he has to stand up in front of everybody and tell them... that takes a lot of courage. And then for them to follow him to the final battle anyway.
And I think it says something about being careful what you wish for, because in the end Cloud *is* technically as enhanced as a Soldier First. And even if he was using Zack's memories, it was still Cloud's actions, and I personally don't buy that everything was just Zack's personality; there are things Cloud does and says that aren't very Zack-like (though maybe my own headcanons are interfering there XD)
But like you said, the point is that in the end, Cloud *is* the hero, because that's what he chose to be.
Screw Advent Children and its personality destruction :(
