Nah, the way it works is that dogs are male and cats are female. If you want a female main character, she'll have to be a sexy werecat. (I'm only half joking here--look at everything from Catwoman to Dark Angel to anime catgirls.)

not necessarily - there were female werewolves in the Howling (well, plus one wereterrier because the female lead ended up looking more terrier than wolf when she transformed)

Female werewolves in Teen Wolf (the show) as well. And they looked similar to the male ones.

Blood and Chocolate also had female werewolves.

"You may think all women are bitches, but I'm the real thing."

I'm pretty sure the presence of a female werewolf in this movie is actually a spoiler, but if you recognise the quote you know the one I mean.

anon that mentioned the Howling:

Oh! I completely forgot about that movie - I really need to rewatch that one the next time it comes on.

It kinda stuck in my head because the first time I saw it the whole 'dead cow falling out of a tree' part scared the everloving crap out of my mother. It was hilarious. It's a fantastic movie though.

or you can hit both and have Kitty Norville... the werewolf.

Not that I can recommend those books.

Those books were what made me really understand how different my idea of "fucked up" is from other people's. I'm willing to write murder, mutilation, and cannibalism, but I think very little of what I've written is as fucked up as the abusive relationship Kitty is trapped in at the beginning of the first book. When people were recommending Kitty Norville to me, no one even thought to mention how fucked up that relationship was!

Spoilers for the first Kitty Norville book

Yeah, the people who recced it to me completely neglected to mention the rape scene, which kind of put me off the rest of the books.
