So what if he likes petite heroines? So do millions of other people (including petite girls who rarely get to be heroines).

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He's got a really weird bald head. No one wants to think about an ugly bald guy being attracted to people.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There's actually a good many of us who like to think about this especially. Like pressing a hot, bald head with both hands down against our crotches, hard and rhythmically. Unf.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my! Thank you for that, nonny.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-05 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ew. Although that explains the embarrassing stanning in these threads

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing. Except that if people start to notice a really obvious pattern, that may be a sign that the line between "trope I like" and "kink I don't even realize I have" is becoming a little blurred. I'm sure at some point, nobody noticed that Quentin Tarentino had a thing about women's feet but secret's out because he couldn't stop putting it in his work again and again.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
And why is it a problem if he kinks on petite heroines?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
well buddy it's just a little bit uncomfortable

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Why?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not petite at all and I don't understand why it's problematic either.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
For whom?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-05 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Petite woman here and I actually love getting to see women like me in media, because the typical standard of beauty in media is an average-height to tall woman.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing. Until people start feeling like instead of just watching an entertaining show, they're learning just a teensy bit too much about the author's fetish... one he's not at all open about having. I for one don't mind. Kickass heroines of all sizes are great. But I feel a bit weird to see it crop up so often in one person's work. It starts to feel a little accidentally voyeuristic, and I'm not into that.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a personal problem to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sure. Though I'm not alone in my squick, I'm guessing.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Fine, but don't make your squick a feminist issue. You can be a feminist and kink on petite heroines.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, absolutely! I'm just not sure that Whedon falls into that category. Maybe if he ever acknowledged that he has a conspicuous kink instead of spinning as just him writing strong female characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-05 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
Why the hell wouldn't he be attracted to the characters he writes? They're awesome! Presumably he writes what he's interested in, which happens to be strong, capable female characters who are also small in stature. None of those components conflict with or invalidate each other.

Would you rather he be faking it? Would you rather he weren't actually interested in strong, capable, small-statured female characters, and was just writing them because he felt obligated to "do right by society"?

Furthermore, I would personally find it slightly weird if he went around talking about how he gets off on his characters. He may well get off on them, and there's nothing wrong with that at all, but talking about it openly would pull the focus off of the ample positive qualities of the characters, and onto their desirability and potential erotic value. Instead of discussing who they are, and encouraging others to appreciate them for who they are, he would be redefining the conversation as one about his own (male) desire, and encouraging others to think of (and value or devalue) the characters in those terms as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I don't follow writers and directors, so unless someone pointed out to me that so and so wrote both X and Y, I probably wouldn't notice anything as small as 'these three shows/films have a lead with the same body type'.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But looking at a show like Firefly, there were THREE female heroines and only one could be called 'petite'.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite and Summer Glau, which ones were "average" sized?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Gina Torres is 5' 9". That is not petite.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-04 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And the others?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
All four of them are 5'5" or over. Petite, by clothing standards, is 5'4" and under, so yes, that would make all of them average.
