If you're having fun, that's the important thing. Don't let any dickheads tell you otherwise.

Is this Goodnight & Billy? Billy didn't exactly dress like that so I'm not positive.

ETA: artist's tumblr quickly tells me no it's not. But same thing applies, if you get into something for the ship, so what?

I really don't understand this pairing. That absolutely isn't a criticism, it's a genuine comment and expression of interest.

I know a little bit about Overwatch lore but I've either overlooked the relevant stuff with these two or there's something else I've just missed somewhere. Any fans want to elucidate? :o

I assume that's partly Op's point; it's great to have fun, and the fandom for this ship is super creative, but like. Until a few weeks ago they even didn't have a single voice line interaction. It's a real left field 'ship the spare hot guys' one.

I get you - I also get OP's migratory slash fandom comment. But by the same token, they're really fun aesthetics to pair if you're into it, and in an 'ensemble' game IMO shipping is sort of a free for all anyway.

Prior the Halloween update they had 0 canon interaction. McCree might have known /of/ Hanzo, since he was in the OW at the same time as Genji. No indication that they had ever met. Hanzo left his clan after killing Genji to become a mercenary, but we know very little of what exactly he did. McCree disappeared for a couple of years after OW fell and re-surfaced as a bounty hunter. Being in a similar line of work, there's a chance they might have crossed paths, but I think that line of thinking came after the ship became popular.

Other popular AU surrounding the pair has to do with them meeting when they were young, since Blackwatch and/or Deadlock Gang both dealt with all sorts of illegal operations, and Hanzo was part of a clan of assassins. Another thing that came after the ship gained traction.

I really just think it has a lot to do with the fact that people found both of them hot and wanted to pair them off. I've seen a lot of fanart going around with artist's comments like "anyway, I know nothing of OW, but these two are cute". And those pieces got huge.

They've gained some voicelines now that they were part of a brawl on Halloween and shippers rejoiced. There's a part of the fandom who thinks it will totally become canon, but I think most realize that it's just fun.

Honestly, Overwatch has a lot of ships that don't have much or any interaction for example Junkrat/Mei or Mei/Zarya. Because there isn't much story yet, and most interactions are few voicelines shared. McHanzo just happens to hit a lot of people's buttons, I guess.

(sry for the novel of an answer :D)

junkrat and mei?? they have loads of interaction she hates his guts

I'm the anon that originally asked, and thank you for the detailed response! I can definitely understand the base appeal of futuristic cowboy/futuristic samurai, and the AU scenarios you've outlined actually do sound genuinely appealing :o!

That being said I'm kind of a bit relieved to hear that this is largely something that's spawned out of fandom rather than the source material, because I seriously thought I'd just missed something really obvious and significant that would have shed some light onto this. In the end I'm still not really engaged with the idea of McHanzo, but I *am* one of those Mei/Zarya shippers, so I 100% understand the idea of looking at a diverse and largely undefined bunch of characters are semi-arbitrarily deciding "I'll ship this!".

Thank you for the response!!

I honestly don't get any of the Overwatch pairings. I just like to play the game and leave shipping out of it.

I'm sick of it to be honest. I was into it for a bit, but it FLOODED EVERYTHING and now I try to black list as much as possible.

That and, even though they don't have much interaction, I kind of sorta ship Mcree/Mei.

McHanzo was the first Overwatch fandom pairing that I got into and I had a lot of fun with it. Now I'm mostly consumed by McCree/Reaper though because I realized that it hits a ton of my kinks (large age difference, mentor/mentee, allies-turned-enemies, etc) but every once in a while I still check out McHanzo fanworks. All that matters is that you enjoy it

I'm into McGenji now and I just...
