Myself, I think it would happen. I've seen people be dicks over way less irl.

Considering I've seen similar things happen more than once, I think it's irrelevant if the story happened exactly as told to exactly this OP anon, but people do behave like that.

Like, someone could reasonably have cancer. It's a thing that happens. That doesn't stop people from pretending to have cancer for sympathy.

I dunno. It doesn't have any of the usual markers that would make me think it's bullshit. It doesn't aggrandize OP, particularly; there's no cringe-inducing and implausible dialogue; it doesn't have any obvious political intent or propaganda value.
