I dunno, I think with the weight of the Miranda secret off her mind, she becomes a lot more stable. She may be young, but she's wise beyond her years. I think River and Mal are the only two people who can really understand each other - Simon may love her dearly, but he doesn't understand what's going on with her most of the time, and he just wants the sister he used to have back. Mal's never known her as anything different and while he looks out for the safety of his crew and doesn't just let her be dangerously crazy, he seems to just accept her for what she is, you know? He talks to/about her like he doesn't care, but I think the fact that he took her back in after the bar fight says heaps about how he really feels about her (not that his feelings are necessarily non-platonic during the course of the series or the movie, but I'm just saying that he does care about her and I can see it eventually developing into more). River understands Mal not just because she's a reader, but also because she's experienced some of the same loss that he had - she lost her sanity, her former life, and she's constantly losing her own inner battles. There are a lot of parallels between them, too (the way Serenity was a safe haven and a place to start over and try to regain what they'd lost... for the rest of the crew too, yes, but especially for Mal and River), and River's psychic abilities seemed to be more linked with Mal than any other character.
It's also worth mentioning that I ship Mal/River post-series, preferrably when she's slightly older (y'know, at least 18) and a little more stable.

Anyway, I thought of my relationship with this particular fellow as Mal/River moreso because I've always been a lot like River (yes, crazy and all), and he's always been like Mal, just considerably younger. I've been changing over time, though, and getting a better hold on myself and am finding myself less and less like River over time, and more like Inara (with a bit of Kaylee too). When I came to that conclusion, it really hit me like a sack of bricks because my relationship with my Mal has been a lot like Mal's and Inara's for a while now. =/ Boo.

TL;DR VERSION: I have some justifications for my ship, bawwwwwwww, angst.

River does become more stable after Miranda, but she's still a kid who's had her brain cut up. I doubt she'll ever be quite right.

Hmm... I can see where you'd interpret all that in a shippy way. Mal and River do have an odd rapport that is unique to them. However, I see Mal as feeling paternal towards her more than anything - he understands her and he's sympathetic to her, she's part of his crew, and he definitely cares for her, but I think it's a fatherly thing, rather than anything likely to evolve into sexual feelings. In fact, just because I view Mal as River's father figure, the idea of him thinking of her in that way squicks me somewhat. Now, I could see it from River's perspective, because she handles emotions differently than the rest of us do, and I think you could make a case for her deciding to pursue Mal sexually based on a variety of factors. Still, I think that if Mal ever gave in and slept with her, which I consider unlikely, his initial reaction (and most likely, his lasting reaction) would be enormous guilt, because of the aforementioned father figure/age difference/brain-having-been-cut-up thing. So, I guess my point is that you might, might be able to plausibly get them to sleep together, but have a relationship, a stable one? That seems incredibly unlikely to me.

Well, I think they can reach a level that can be close enough to stability, considering both of their issues. I'd see it being a lot healthier than Mal/Inara, anyway... while Mal and River have a lot of issues, their energy together is overall positive. With Mal and Inara, it just seems so destructive. My Mal and I have been in those exact shoes so many times, saying lines very similar to what they say to each other, and for as much as I love him, it hurts a lot and I don't see it ever working for good with him - we've been up and down, on and off so many times for the last two and a half years. And I forgot where I was going with this (I'm a little high, whoops), sorry. D:
