38. Well, first off, sexist Japan, lol. Second, Luffy is sort of Peter Pan, so it would be weird if he were a girl.

I see what you're saying, and I don't think that Luffy being a girl would be terrible or anything, but it would change the feel of the thing. Instead of being "Friendship and following your dreams!" it would be "Girl power and following your dreams!" Not to say that there's anything wrong with girl power. It just isn't the message of One Piece.

I assume that people like you< are the reasons secrets like that are made. I'm not a big anime fan, and my exposure to most series is limited. However, I still think it's hugely ridiculous to imply that if a character is female, the entirety of the ideals that they possess is warped into something different.

Believe it or not, characters with their own particular quirks and values exist outside of gender, race, and other 'classifications.' Luffy being female wouldn't change One Piece all that much, provided that she was still...well, written as Luffy. If she had the same personality and goals, why the hell would One Piece send a different message? Because breasts change everything?

It's not that there's anything wrong with female leads. It's that when you do something out of the norm like that, people don't say, "oh, cool" they say, "Why is she a girl?" That's just the truth of the situation. I think that there need to be a lot more strong female leads out there, certainly, but I do think that sort of a shift would change the dynamic of the show quite a lot.
