So what you're saying is that they shouldn't have any canonically gay characters, because they need to protect fans who like het ships

(Anonymous) 2016-11-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me where that's not literally what the secret says

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're too much of an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
DA +1, if they'd said "I don't want them to confirm anybody's sexuality so everyone can ship in peace" that's different. But they specifically want no gay characters confirmed so het shippers won't be bothered.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Tbf the secret does ALSO say that they think that slash shippers are mostly interested in stealing characters from het shippers so. That's also good.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
OP here.

I already feel bad about submitting this secret as I think I expressed myself badly...

I am NOT saying I don't want any gay characters!
I AM saying I want the characters' sexualities to remain secret/open to interpret as you like.

I mentioned gay characters specifically because shipping a character that has been confirmed to be gay with someone of the opposite sex would be considered erasure of their sexuality.
No such thing would happen with a character who has been confirmed to be straight, bi or even asexual (they don't have to be aromantic).

Ship whatever you like! Think of their sexualities however you like!
I just want to be able to enjoy my m/f ships in peace and also share fanfic / fanart about them with others.

If part of my OTP were to be confirmed gay, I don't think I would still feel comfortable shipping it.
But I would be incredibly sad about the fanart/fanfic that would be left unfinished/deleted.

Gay people obviously deserve their representation in media. I am sure that many people who hope for official word from Blizzard want it.

It's just hard for me to believe that sometimes when I see people get flamed for just liking a 'boring' m/f ship in their own little corner of tumblr, without ever having said anything negative about m/m or f/f ships.

Not only straight people ship straight ships, btw.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that kind of is what's being said. Het shippers can put on their grown-up pants and refuse to delete stuff that wasn't jossed when they created it. This projected hypothetical wank is only one part of a multitude of potential shipping wank no matter what happens in canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Considering the way anyone in the DA:I fandom shipping Dorian or Sera with someone of the opposite gender gets harassed I'd say it's not so much a hypothesis but a pretty likey prediction.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Het shippers get disproportionately shat on and screamed at for turning gay characters straight. Were this not a thing and we lived in a ship-and-let-ship world, then canon sexuality wouldn't matter.

Yeah, yeah, I know, "representation" and "straight-washing" and HDU, blah blah boo hoo. I've heard it all before and it's still hypocritical as hell.

We'll stop shitting on you for turning gay characters straight when we no-longer live in a world where gay people are being literally and legally tortured in an attempt to turn them straight. When, I don't have to worry about being kidnapped, electrocuted, raped, and beaten to death for who I love, then you can have your shitty ships in peace, you utter fucking asshole.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you live in the Middle East. :(

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
poor oppressed het fans

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
No, I think that they're saying there's a small group of awful, awful people who would use 'But it's canon' to mess with the 'Ship and let ship' philosophy the rest of us het, slash, poly, ace, and experimental shippers use to get along with each other. While waving the You're Oppressing Me flag every time they're asked to not be awful.

I'm personally happy with subtext. Non-canon ships can be a lot of fun!

To be clear: they're saying that those people exist, and that they're specifically slash shippers, and that the Overwatch team's creative decisions should be determined by their existence.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
...are you saying those people don't exist? Because I've seen them right here on F!S.

And the OP didn't say "should be." They said "I hope."

...are you saying those people don't exist? Because I've seen them right here on F!S.

I think that many different kinds of awful people exist. It's the other links in the chain of logic that I'm skeptical of.

And the OP didn't say "should be." They said "I hope."

That seems like a distinction without a difference to me? Like, I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to point to here.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
JFC, they expressed a hope. They're not saying it SHOULD be this way.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I said it in the other reply above, but I don't see a huge difference between those things? Apparently that's not common, though, so maybe I'm misunderstanding.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't get the difference between "I wish" and "you should," I don't really know what to tell you.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, obviously they're not actually dictating terms to the creative team. But both of those things seem to me to mean something like "I think it would be better if they did this" or "I want them to do this" or something.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
OP here.
I'm not sure how to clarify here. I was just stating a personal preference that I don't mean to force on anybody or even demand from Blizzard.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
"they're saying that those people exist, and that they're specifically slash shippers"

TBF, They are not wrong. The most brutal fandom policing I have seen is when someone decide to ship a gay character in a het romance. Cuz..you know, making a character fuck a dog is cool, but a pretend het romance is literally killing gay kids.
