What really throws me out of these things and makes me backbutton super hard is when they use "y/n" for "your name." For fuck's sake, use a pet name. I'm trying to get immersed here, and "y/n" is so artificial and distracting.

Yes, I read them. There is a reason I'm anon. :p

And then when they get into things like "y/h/c" for "your hair color". Eeeesh.

God yes, that is so terrible. There are good writers out there that manage to avoid it, though.

I thought they used y/n so you could download and find/replace it to your actual name?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
...why. Why would I do that.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-15 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
because it's a self-insert?

What.

y/n means yes/no.

Fucking kids get off my lawn.

I know, right? First time I ran into that, I sat there scratching my head for several seconds until I figured it out. Then I eyerolled and backbuttoned.

This. I loved Choose Your Own Adventures books and they gave you a basic persona and used that and "you" throughout. It throws me out of the fic trying to parse [y/n] every time. Can't they just use a pet name if it's a romance/smut fic?!
