Good on you, OP!

I've come to the realization that if I want the perfect winter coat, I will have to make it myself, since everything I can find in stores is A)some kind of nylon Michelin Man cosplay, B) an "I've never been mountain climbing but I hope you think I have" jacket, or C) a boxy wool thing that frequently does not extend down far enough to protect my thighs from the cold, cold wind. I don't know why I can't have a wool coat that goes down to my knees and isn't shaped like a flour sack (I realize coats need plenty of ease so you can wear warm clothes under them, but that doesn't mean they can't have some shape to them).

I can sew, but I don't have much experience with wool or tailoring.

Wool is hard to work with for beginners, but you can buy a coat that is too big for you and have it tailored for a reasonably low price. When I was living in a place that really did winter I had an awesome calf-length navy blue wool coat that I tailored then wore with a belt, but it would be way too hot for where I live now. :(

That would be a great idea if they made wool coats in colors that looked good on me. Black is okay, but pretty blah. My other options are basically just navy, fire engine red, and camel, wtf?

I'm not a beginner sewer, but I've never sewn with wool. I'd have to practice on some smaller projects.
