Same reason people lose files when moving computers. It doesn't matter how organized you are, if you're packing up 10,000 things (made up number, but probably accurate for some people) a few will slip through the craps. They get thrown away accidentally, they get packed in a box you never get around to opening, they get left behind somehow, etc.
