I don't mind longer series, but I can't stand it when the plot never seems to go anywhere. Or when every new book retcons all the character development that happened in the one before.

This is kind of how I feel about Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I just could NOT finish it.

This. If the story warrants being really long, then great. I like reading long things. But have the plot go somewhere and have the characters actually change and grow.

That's something that gets me with tv sometimes, too. I like story/character arcs, but I'll take an episodic procedural over an on-going saga where nothing happens or changes any day. At least the procedural is telling stories.
