I don't think I'll ever find anywhere in fandom where I fit in.

And it's not even strictly a matter of tastes. It's like I don't share a basic worldview with 95% of fandom. I read their opinions, and they're completely bizarre and unfathomable to me, like I'm living in an alternate reality or something.

I don't know if all this is because I'm older or not, but I feel so alone.

Ditto.

With me, it's more that I feel like I come from an older faction. I like most of the canons I follow; I like the ships, but I don't really care that much about them. And I don't give a crap about the actors. I want to meta really hard, because that's what my old fandoms were.

Probably because you're older. There tends to be huge differences between the worldview of a 20-yr-old college student, and a 50-yr-old who's had kids and is now an empty nester, you know? And it's not even just age. The bigger the life experience gap grows, the harder it can be to cross.

For me, even when I was a teenager I felt this big disconnect with the average fan because I was literally a gay immigrant thug, and the average fans seemed to be white middle-class American girls in college. I was living the scenarios that cropped up in their gritty darkfic. There's this huge difference in the worlds we're living in.

Maybe look for other spaces for your fandoms? There's a lot more than just tumblr out there. Most things have reddit pages, for example. Or you could look for media that draws lots of fans who are closer to you. I know a lot of 30+ fans play MMOs, for example.

I'm on the old side for being fannish and I don't feel like I fit in anywhere. Societal norms have shifted and all the things I grew up thinking were acceptable are now problematic. I can't even ship whom I like because one half of the ship has somehow become the personification of evil.

Same here.

I am with you on this. I was in my mid to late 20s during LJ's heyday, and I felt like I fit right in. Now I've hit 40 and Tumblr just doesn't appeal to me that much and I feel like I am not part of the fan community anymore, and it saddens me.

AYRT - I just hit 40, too, and this is my experience, exactly.

It's not just the platforms. The way fandom engages with media in general is alien to me.

Yes, this. I used to love the communities and the squeeing, and the discussion and so much more, but now it seems more like an echo chamber where you have to have the "right" opinion (and forget actually wanting to discuss the nuance of anything) and pretty pictures. And I like pretty pictures, don't get me wrong, but I want more than that, as that alone doesn't make me feel like part of a community. And I loved being part of a community.

That's one of the things that gets to me the most; that there's only one "correct" opinion to have on anything, and anyone who deviates from it, even slightly, is fair game for bullying.
