I've been into the furry thing for as long as I can remember, and although I don't have a fursuit I really wanted one ever since I first discovered the furry fandom. I think a lot of the fursuits are really cute and it would be fun to dress up as my character. (Well, the well-made fursuits, at least, I've seen some really ugly ones where it was clear that the people making them had no idea what they were doing).

But as of lately, I've stepped back and looked at the community as a whole, at many of the people I met through it, at my experiences throughout all the years I've been into it, and realized that a lot of the negative stereotypes about furries are indeed truer than I'd like to admit. It's not about suddenly finding furry art and fursuits creepy looking, or thinking that the concept of animal-people is gross or stupid, it's the general atmosphere of the community itself that's making me finally realize why furries have such a bad reputation to the rest of the world. I guess all these years, I was just in denial about it because I really wanted to enjoy being part of the furry fandom. I love the concept of anthropomorphic animal characters and enjoy a lot of the art and costumes, but I've run into so many creepy overgrown children and drama-inducing assholes that I've been questioning it more and more lately.

So to sum it all up, I now feel like people have reasons to hate furries, but a lot of people just happen to hate them for the wrong reasons. I still think it's ridiculous that people will look down on furries because they think the fetish aspects are too weird when there's tons of disturbing fetish fic and fanart in the more "acceptable" fandoms, or complain about how creepy it is to dress up in animal costumes but have no problem with people dressing up as anime characters or superheroes. If you're going to look down on a fandom community, there are plenty of more legitimate reasons to dislike furries as a whole. Just saying that as someone who's been in it for a really long time.
