AYRT I actually like the early Shannara books, though you're right in that Sword is definitely the weakest. I think they meant 'like Tolkien' in the sense of a full high fantasy, with significant elements like the major races and the whole 'fellowship of heroes' thing borrowed from him. Sword was weak, but I really enjoyed Elfstones, Wishsong and the Heritage quadrilogy. The problem with the series is that it just kept going, especially once he welded the Knight and the Word trilogy into the same universe. I liked that trilogy as a stand-alone, I didn't need it all mashed into one single never-ending universe.
