Back then no one was ashamed. We didn't even think we had reason to be.

Oh for God's sake here we go again

DA. It's not that there wasn't hostility towards pairings like Snape/Harry, but the first time around there was a much stronger fandom-wide/internet-wide vibe of 'you do you' and people who stomped in to flame people for their pairings and fic were widely regarded as being childish and pathetic rather than people to be applauded for taking a stand against unhealthy ships.

I mean, there's no denying that there's been a shift in fandom over the last decade, whether you like it or not.

I agree that there have been changes.

The two related things that bother me are: (1) treating older Internet fandom as a state of prelapsarian bliss and (2) implying that the people who are being critical are necessarily in the wrong in all cases.

The other thing that bothers me in regard to this secret is that it's reading a lot into what the OP actually said.

Also to be clear I don't care about the ship one way or another.

reading a lot into what the OP actually said

LMAO

That's fucking rich.

SA.

??? I didn't say either of those things.

Though I do generally agree that in fandom if something's not to your taste that you should just stay away from something and let other people have fun. I think policing what people ship, no matter how problematic the pairing, and being hateful is just a waste of time.

That's not what I got from you - I think your post was very reasonable - it's what I got from "back then no one was ashamed because we didn't think we had reason to be".

And I know I'm extrapolating a little there, sorry it's hyperbolic

SA. Oh! No worries, that makes more sense. :) Thanks for taking the time to clear up the confusion!

I don't see ayrt or anyone else in this thread treating older Internet fandom as "a state of prelapsarian bliss", though.

Sounds like generic hyperbole for sake of hyperbole to me, but by all means get upset over it.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-23 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.
I shipped Snarry back then and I never ever encountered anti-shipping, hostility or anything.
Now I'm shipping Reylo and while I don't exactly feel persecuted, I realize that there's a lot of hostility from other shippers...

(Anonymous) 2016-11-23 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
We had joy, we had fun, we had Snape and Harry's son
But the wine and the song, like the Snarry, have all gone

(Anonymous) 2016-11-23 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks VERY much for the earworm from my youth. Grrr...

(Anonymous) 2016-11-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Thank god that's changed.
