Re: What question do you hate being asked?

"So what do you do?"

I've never had a job. I'm in my 30s.

Are you independently wealthy?

And that's a pretty common social question, so if you don't work (for whatever reason, be it lack of need to or disability or whatever) you can always fill that answer space with hobbies or things?

nayrt

Oh man now I want to start answering that question with, "Oh, I'm independently wealthy," and waggling my eyebrows.

Other alternative:
"I'm a rich widow/widower." And then shoot them a mean grin.

I actually know someone like that, and can't lie, I'm a bit jealous (I mean it was awful at the time, but his wife died over 15 years ago and he can still live comfortably).

I hate that too. Part of me wants to have the presence of mind to say, "I work at Kentucky Fried Chicken."

Yeah, this question is the absolute worst if you're someone who doesn't have a job.

I waitressed for a couple of years after high school, and then my poor mental health caught up with me and I didn't work at all for like seven years. And it's not like I had children to look after or anything, so I literally had no answer to that question. And the older I got the more uncomfortable and shitty I would feel whenever someone asked me what I did.

I've been working part time for a couple of years now, and one of the best things about it is that when people ask me what I do, I have an answer that's somewhat less embarrassing and demoralizing.

However, the job I have is extremely social, so now I have to deal with the people I work with constantly asking me, "So what else do you do besides this?" *throws up hands*

I never know what to answer for the best, so I usually respond with, "I'm disabled."

Then I get the Spanish Inquisition. What do you mean, you can't work? Not even part-time? Why not? But surely you could work from home?

And then there are further questions about the nature of my disability, suggestions of cures based on magazine articles, and so on and so forth.

If I answer that I write - which I do - there's a whole different set of rude, prying questions.

Seriously I don't know why "what do you do" is considered a polite thing to ask at all. JUSTIFY YOUR EXISTENCE is what it's really saying.
