Re: What question do you hate being asked?

I completely agree that this is a bullshit question and really, just like, WTF people?

But I'm wondering: In your opinion, is it bothersome if someone you've been chatting with for a bit asks you a question like "So were you born here in [Western country] or did you move here from somewhere else?"

I mean, obviously if you're already getting racist/xenophobic vibes from the person, the question is going to get your hackles up. But if the person was just making conversation, would you find it an annoying question by default?

DA I think the implication is that it's a follow up question to "So where are you from?" "Utah." No, but where are you REALLY from?"

Had a friend who's whiter than white bread but her parents gave her an unusual name and any job that required a name tag she got this multiple times a week.

Yeah, that's how I was reading it. I just figure that most people who get asked that are probably visible minorities.

"Where are you REALLY from?" is not a question I go around asking visible minorities, for one because I'm not an ass, and for two because I live in Vancouver and many of the POCs who live here are at least second generation. So, like, HERE is where they're REALLY from.

But my job is very social, and very racially and ethnically diverse, so it's not uncommon for me to ask someone I've been chatting with if they were born in Canada or came here from another country. And, like, I doubt there's anything wrong with that, but you never know, it could still put some people on edge I guess?
